Ethnic Signs of Utica, New York.

GERMAN


" Witzenberger " Building. German? Late Victorian masonry architectural sign on Columbia Street at State Street, downtown.




" Pulver " Roofing truck and yard, Erie Street, west Utica. The surname " Pulver " can be German or German Jewish.




" Steuben Park ". German. Downtown Utica. For Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, 1730-1794. Served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution; one of George Washington's most important assistants. Recent revelations suggest that he was a closeted gay man in the tradition of Frederick the Great.

" Meldino's ". I'm pretty sure that this is Bosnian. Mohawk Street, east Utica.


" Muminovic " Auto. Bosnian or other Eastern European. Oriskany Boulevard, west Utica.



" Kozar's " Grill. Eastern European. West Utica.


" Spilka's " Hotel. Eastern European? West Utica.




" Polish Veteran's Association ". Polish. West Utica.




" Urbank's " Paint & Wallpaper Co. Columbia Street, downtown. A large and beautiful painted wood sign, one of my favorites. Urbanik is a Polish, Czech and Slovak name.

" St. John of Kronstadt ". Russian Orthodox. East Utica.

" O' Scugnizzo " Pizzeria. Locally famous and for decades regarded as one of the best pizzeria's in Utica, it was recently sold out of the original family. Regarded by many lifelong residents as the best pizza in Utica. Bleecker Street, downtown Utica.

" Castronovo's Original Grimaldi's ". One of Utica's longest lasting and most classic vintage Italian restaurants. I seem to recall a white baby grand piano there. Closed 2013. Bleecker Street, downtown. 




" Giuseppe's " Great homemade gourmet pastries! Bakery. Mohawk Street, east Utica.

" De Iorio's ". Pizza dough manufacturer undergoing a huge expansion in 2014. Bleecker Street, east Utica.




" Napolis " Italian Bakery. East Utica.




" Banda Rossa Circolo Musicale ". Vintage window sign on Bleecker Street, east Utica.

" Mercurio's " Automotive. Fay Street, west Utica. Demolition for greenway begun on this building in 2013.

" Min Htet Win Oriental Market ". I believe this is Vietnamese? Albany Avenue, east Utica.





" Dao Trang Minh Dang Quang " Buddhist Temple. I believe this is Vietnamese and that the statue is of the Asian goddess Quan Am? West Utica.



" Pho Shizzle " Vietnamese Noodle Soup Restaurant. Great name. Seem to have gone out of business in 2013 after a short life. Not such a big demand for Viet cuisine in Yorkville, New York.




" Utica Karen Church ". Myanmar Burmese, South Street, east Utica.




" Panda House ". Chinese Food; with endearing and slightly amusing " We're Delivery " spelling error. Genesee Street, downtown.




" The Mariam ".  Karen & Thai Cuisine. Bleecker Street, downtown Utica.





" Raj Dari - Del ". West Utica.

" Dominican Barbershop ". Mohawk Street, east Utica.

" Toma's Lebanese Deli ". Mohawk Street, East Utica. Announced closing after many years in early 2014.



Taste of Lebanon festival reflects the influence of many generations of Lebanese in Utica, many of whom are prominent in business.

" Jweid's Market ".  A very popular long time corner store in a rough section of downtown Utica.

" Schuyler Street ".  Dutch; and one of the oldest and most historically prominent colonial names in New York State.


IRISH
